Fig. 1.1: A Sov politician.

The Sov are a highly capitalist and very aggressive insectoid race featured in Sigma.

Physiology

Most Sov are roughly a half foot to one foot in height and posses features common to most insects. Their exoskeleton ranges from a dull gold to dark russet in colour and they most often possess six appendages used for walking and manipulating objects. The Sov posses two eyes characterized by four pupils and as such are able to receive far more advanced visual information then most biological races. The Sov are unique in that they have more then two genders, all of which differ from the standard males and females of the humans Zevestivan, and Jevorons. Because of this the Sov are genetically the most diverse species on record and have adapted to the many diseases that plague their homeworld. All Sov posses four antennae that are sensitive to electromagnetic fields. Once the Sov developed the technological capacity to generate electricity they eventually used this sense to develop a unique mathematical language based on the manipulation of EM fields.

Culture and Society

Main Article: Sov Consortium

The Sov are a race of extremely aggressive and competitive capitalists, in which there is no room for weakness and those unable to make a living are almost always abandoned to die. For this reason the saying "There is no such thing as a poor Sov" has become commonplace among other races. Individual Sov are greedy, selfish, and ultimately self-serving. They will stop at nothing to use others to achieve their own ends and in their society this is considered normal and morally sound. Because of their ruthless and survivalist nature the Sov are considered emotionless and without compassion. This is indeed true, more or less, as the Sov seem immune to most forms of emotional trauma and psychological effects outside of fear.

When encountering another race, the Sov are unlikely to take an aggressive stance unless that race proves to be hostile, as they tend to be rather cowardly and prefer profit over violence. However, they will defend themselves aggressively when provoked.

Technology

Main Article: Sov Technology

The Sov are considered primitive in fields such as weaponry and ship construction, though they excel in most financial fields and are very proficient in mathematics, economics, and computer theory. They have mastered the manipulation of electricity, EM fields, and Dark Matter Trailing. Because of their highly logical nature the Sov also excel in mining technology and the development of drones and artificial intelligence.

Role in Plot

Pre-Sigma

The Sov were the first race to make contact with the Zevestivan, which lead to several decades of isolation until they were invited to the First Meeting of Xeno Races. Upon learning more of their galactic neighbors, the Sov prepared for financial expansion. Little thought was given to warfare.

First Zevestivan War

When war erupted between the V.R.A. and Zevestivan peoples, the Sov immediately took to the offensive and rushed the border in the Palreeuh Nebula Rift to overtake valuable resources in V.R.A. space. The blitz would have been successful and ultimately would have led to the conquest of the V.R.A. if it were not for an Ekoset invasion that proceeded shortly after. Forced to deal with the new threat, Sov forces quickly retreated from the front and were repositioned to repel the Ekoset forces. Eventually the Ekoset progressed into the Rift and turned their attention away from the Sov and unto the V.R.A.. Seeing a massive financial opportunity, the Sov Overseer made a pact with Colonel Lyon Stein and joined forces to take down the Ekoset leader figure.

The Great Xeno War

Surrounded on all sides by the Ekoset, U.C, and Mylocks, the Sov inescapably became caught in the middle of this massive conflict. Because of the large amounts of resources they had been able to secure over the previous few years, they were able to produce many thousands of ships to help repel enemies from their borders.

The Aabtani Infestation

Sov planets were among the first to be infested by the Aabtani. As such their species was nearly destroyed as their network of worlds fell to this new threat. Eventually The United Confederation and its allies eliminated the Aabtani threat and the Sov were left to rebuild.

Post-Sigma

The Sov initiated trade with their interstellar neighbors, but otherwise kept to themselves.
